THE WINNING CONCEPT

The City of Amsterdam and RAI Amsterdam issued a tender in June 2014 for the development, realisation and operation of a headquarter hotel next to the RAI. It received no fewer than 11 submissions, all of an exceptionally high quality. Each of the parties received high marks on the proposal for a hospitality function on the top floor. The winning concept by OMA, COD & Being Development and the NH Hotel Group triumphed over the competition by adding special facilities such as a gallery, sculpture garden, restaurant & bar and, most remarkable of all, the iconic design.

On behalf of COD and our development partner Being Development, we are proud and honoured that the City of Amsterdam and the RAI chose our plan. With the spectacular nhow Amsterdam RAI concept and the iconic design by OMA we will enrich the skyline of the Zuidas district. Moreover, the hotel will be a valuable addition to the city and the RAI.

DESIGN

Het Signaal

The design of nhow Amsterdam RAI was inspired by one of the most iconic features of RAI Amsterdam, the advertising column known as ‘Het Signaal’.

OMA partner Reinier de Graaf:

RAI Amsterdam has needed a ‘new’ urban face since the establishment of the Zuidas district. The prominent advertising column, known as ‘Het Signaal’, provided the inspiration for the new nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel which is to be both part of the new context and an expansion of RAI Amsterdam itself.

OMA for nhow

The architects from OMA also developed the design of nhow Rotterdam, which opened its doors on the Wilhelminakade in the Kop van Zuid area in 2014. The four-star hotel located in ‘De Rotterdam’ features an interior and exterior both designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas.

Interior Design

The room design is inspired by the six cardinal directions to which the building’s corners point: South, East, North, South West, South East and North West. Themes from the “Golden Age” of Amsterdam as a commercial centre of Europe surface in the rooms together with well-known international symbols.
